Memorial seat for John Shaughnessy RIP
Last summer, the waterways and community of Athy lost a dear friend in John Shaughnessy RIP. Not only was John a great campaigner and advocate for the waterways, he was a resident boatman and angler in the hearts of so many. Having spent a lifetime on the river Barrow, John introduced countless kids and adults alike to the arts of fishing and boating. He was instrumental in establishing numerous boating projects in Athy, from the community boat, Aiséirí, to helping secure moorings in the town or to training Skippers on the tour boat, Freedom On The Water. Very little happened on the river in Athy without John being involved. Therefore, it was very fitting that on the August bank holiday weekend, a river view seat dedicated to John was unveiled at the Library in Athy. Organised by work colleagues from Kildare County Library Service, the occasion drew river users from across all water sports, hobbies and passions. Given the large crowd in attendance, it was easy to see the impact John had on both the lives of so many and the waterways as a whole. While he continues to be missed by all, this fitting tribute is an ideal resting spot for the waterside rambler to sit, watch the river and remember our great friend.
