Mural of a Perch at Garter Lane in Athy

New Murals of Local Biodiversity

A number of new Waterways themed murals have appears on the walls of several buildings in Athy in recent months. These are a collaboration between Creative Places Athy, local businesses, Athy MD, and the local community in Athy. These murals illustrate Athy’s commitment to climate change, the importance of eco systems, natural habitats and the waterways. They represents biodiversity, wildlife, flora and fauna in showcasing the beauty of the natural and built environment along the river Barrow. Created by artists Marian Noone AKA Friz, artist Gerry Norman and artist Paul Woods. The murals are also a representation of diversity and inclusion within the local community. For example, this is illustrated by the inclusion of a Monarch Butterfly at the bottom of the mural on Stanhope street. The Monarch Butterfly is an international symbol for the deaf community and local group, Athy Sing & Sign. The mural the heron as the main feature has attracted much attention in particular throughout the town of Athy. Locals have named him Bertie A. Heron after former Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. Brightening up the town and refocusing people’s attention on the waterways, these murals are greatly welcomed. A huge congratulations and well done to all involved.
